Canned light

Clou with can

Canned Light is the name of this compact and artfully simple hanging lamp. Because, with Canned Light, an original Campbell’s Tomato Soup can functions not only as a lampshade, but also as packaging. “You buy a can and then everything you need is in it,” is how designer Christoph Matthias describes the idea behind the design. Together with Hagen Sczech, his work colleague at Ingo Maurer GmbH at that time, they both developed this original lamp, which can be mounted both as a wall lamp and as a suspension. The clou: like a conventional can, the Campbell can of Canned Light is filled with all the parts it needs to use Canned Light as a wall lamp or pendant light. Not even a can opener is needed to access the contents of the Canned Light, because – just like the original Campell’s Tomato Soup – the Canned Light has a pull ring.

Campbell’s is cult

“Campbell’s Tomato Soup is the most iconic can ever“, says lighting designer Christoph Matthias in an interview with TAGWERC, looking back on the creation of the Canned Light. Campbell’s Tomato Soup with the iconic red and white label was launched on the market as early as 1897. It was the first soup created by Campbell. With minor changes, the recipe for the tomato soup is said to be virtually unchanged to this day. To ensure that the soup met taste expectations, Campbell says they conducted extensive research, including taste tests with people in all 50 states of the USA. The results showed that the overwhelming majority of people still liked Campbell’s tomato soup. Nine out of ten people said they would buy Campbell’s Tomato Soup as often or more often after trying it.

Campbell’s Soup Cans as a work of art

One of those who had a special relationship with Campbell’s Soup was Andy Warhol. “I ate the same [Campbell’s soup] for lunch every day for twenty years“, Warhol is quoted on the Museum of Modern Art website. In Los Angeles, Warhol first exhibited his ‘Campbell’s Soup Cans’ paintings of Campbell’s soups in a solo exhibition in 1962. With 32 different Campbell’s Soup flavours, each of the 32 paintings represented a soup variety. The artworks were displayed side by side like the cans lined up next to each other on the shelf at the grocery shop. These paintings not only helped launch Warhol’s career and establish Pop Art as a major art movement in the United States, but also made Campbell’s Soup famous worldwide.

Design Statement

By experimentally using a Campell’s Tomato Soup can as a lampshade and a light source housed inside, breathtaking scenarios can be created – inspired by Andy Warhol. Therefore, the wall and pendant lamp Canned Light fits everywhere where a design statement is desired but perhaps not expected. As a bedside lamp to the right and left of the bed, as a wall lamp in the hallway, a guest toilet, above a desk, in a group of pendant lamps above the dining table, a counter, the bar – there are hardly no limits to the versatility of the Canned Light.

Wall and pendant lighting in one

With a diameter of the lampshade of 8.5 centimeters, the Canned Light pendant luminaire is equipped with a cable of two meters length. Mounted as a wall lamp, the Canned Light has a depth of 18 centimeters and a height of 15 centimeters. In addition to the Canned Light wall and pendant lamp, you get the entire Ingo Mauer collection at TAGWERC. Online, in the TAGWERC Design STORE, you will experience a curated selection of Ingo Maurer design objects.
