Dalilips Sofa

In the 1970s, the Spanish surrealist Dalí meets his compatriot Oscar Tusquets Blanca, architect and founding member of BD Barcelona. BD Barcelona’s relationship with the art world is deeply rooted in the beginnings of the Spanish company and begins in 1972 with Salvador Dalí, one of the greatest painters of the 20th century. Between 1972 and 1974, the Spanish Grand Master developed the “Salivasofa”, the legendary art sofa inspired by the lips of the American film actress Mae West – actually Mary Jane West – and produced for Mae West Hall in the Theatre Museum in Figueras. A first prototype was built in 1973. Although the sofa was conceived as a limited series from the beginning, it is not produced in series at that time. It was not until thirty years later, in 2004, that it was to be available as the “Dalilips” sofa.

The Dalilips Sofa is more like a sculpture than a couch. Although the Dalilips Sofa is made of polyethylene, its detailed and multifaceted design makes it look deceptively real and authentic – like an oversized red kiss mouth. The seat is located on the lower lip, while the upper lip forms the backrest. The kiss mouth is undoubtedly one of the symbols of love and is used as such in many ways. With red lipstick emphasized lips, kissmouths on letters and envelopes and the kiss mouth emoji of these days symbolize love. The Dalilips Sofa can accommodate two people. The perfect place for lovers, or those, who still want to become one.

Salvador Dalí, master of Surrealism, understood himself as no one else to make dreams and fantastic apparitions become reality with his paintings. He opened himself up to the fantastic and irrational world and deliberately used the eroticism and the taboo break in his art and created a reality above reality, according to the meaning of the French words “sur – above” and “réalisme – reality”. Clocks melting in the sun, elephants running on long spider legs, bodies with drawers – elements and sequences typical of Dalí in his paintings. And as here, with the Dalilips Sofa, plump, red lips whose plastic formed shape formally attracts the viewer and even invites to linger.

In the bedroom, a dressing room, but also outside in the garden, on a terrace, on board of a yacht or on the beach – the Dalilips Sofa is suitable for outdoor use and simply invites you to bed and use everywhere. Due to its rather compact size of 1.70 meters, the Dalililips Couch can even be accommodated where other sofas would simply be too bulky. Dalilips are undoubtedly always a highlight that will be remembered – no matter where it is placed.

The Dalilips Sofa is part of BD Barcelona’s Art Editions, which includes works of art made exclusively in-house – unique and of timeless elegance and value. The furniture of the Salvador Dalí Collection offered in the TAGWERC Design STORE is not just furnishings – they are works of art that take the viewer and the user on a surrealist journey.

Salvador Dalí is one of the most famous - if not the most famous Spanish painter of the 20th century. The native Catalan is considered the main representative of surrealism. His paintings fetch top prices and are represented in the most important collections. The art objects shown here are plasticizations from his paintings. Partly in limited editions manufactured, they reflect Dalí's ideas.
