by Antoni Gaudí, 1902

The Calvet Bench was designed in 1902 by Antoni Gaudí for the Casa Calvet house in Barcelona and is a design classic in the style of Modernisme, a Spanish style of Art Nouveau. BD Barcelona manufactures the Calvet Bench by hand from oak in exactly the same way that Casa y Bardés once did in Gaudí’s lifetime. Calvet Bench

For Casa Calvet, Antoni Gaudí designed a selection of tables, chairs – with and without armrests, benches, stools, shelves and paintings – undoubtedly the largest and most homogeneous collection of furniture that Antoni Gaudí designed throughout his lifetime. Casa Calvet was the first residential building of Gaudí and was awarded in 1900 with the prize for the best building in Barcelona. The Calvet Bench, like the other furniture from the Calvet Collection, is still displayed at the Gaudí Museum in The Parc Güell in Barcelona with almost two millions visitors a year.

In 1975, BD Barcelona revived the furniture of the Spanish architect Antoni Gaudí. Furniture designed by Antoni Gaudí for his houses Casa Batlló and Casa Calvet is produced according to exactly the same elaborate production processes that were used in the production of the first pieces at that time. In addition to the „Batlló Chair“, „Calvet Armchair“ and “Calvet Chair” named after the houses, the „Calvet Bench, “Calvet Mirror” and the “Calvet Wall Wardrobe”, there are stylistic elements such as door handles and peepholes, so-called “spies”, that make Gaudí’s unique Modernisme design style experienceable in the own four walls.

The Calvet Bench is more like a sculpture than a settee. Although the Calvet Bench is made of solid oak, its curved and elegant design does not make it look chunky or heavy. Exhibited hind legs give the Calvet Bench a solid stand. A seat that runs to the front edge in a gentle wave gives two persons extra space for their legs. Together with the richly decorated backrest, this provides a certain dynamism to the Calvet Bench and the typical design style Gaudí is well known for.

In the bedroom, a dressing room, in the hallway or a previously unused niche – the Calvet Bench invites you to linger for a short or longer time and, due to its compact size, quickly finds its perfect place even without a generous space. As a highlight at the reception or seat in a head office, the Calvet Bench stands for discreet luxury, which a connoisseur recognizes and appreciates. The furniture of the Calvet Collection offered in the TAGWERC Design STORE is not just furnishings – they are design objects and art pieces at the same time, which take the viewer and the user on a journey into design history.

The Calvet Bench is part of BD Barcelona’s Art Editions, which includes exclusively in-house art objects – unique and of timeless elegance and value. TAGWERC, the official partner of BD Barcelona, offers the original designs from the Art Editions of BD Barcelona – online and offline.

Antoni Gaudí is one of the most famous - if not the most famous - Spanish architect of the 20th century. Born in Catalonia, he created a series of fantastic buildings in his home city of Barcelona that still attract millions of visitors every year. To match his buildings, Gaudí created a range of furnishings that reflect his design style, 'Modernisme'.
